Historic Win for Workers at Maryland School for the Deaf

Maryland School for the Deaf members overwhelmingly voted to unionize and they chose AFT. The union election victory is just the first step to getting the demands they deserve.

It is rare to get 99% of people to do anything these days, unless it's unionization at the Maryland School for the Deaf. Last week, faculty and staff at the state facility voted 159-2 to unionize, authorizing the Maryland School for the Deaf Faculty and Staff Association, Local 4828 (MSDFSA) to serve as the exclusive bargaining agent for faculty and staff at the school. Over 300 teachers, speech language pathologists, dorm counselors, and other faculty and staff of the Maryland School for the Deaf filed paperwork today with the Maryland State Labor Relations Board demanding an election that could grant the workers collective bargaining rights. For years, members of the Maryland School for the Deaf Faculty and Staff Association (AFT-Maryland Local 4828, AFT, AFL-CIO) have appealed to school administrators and Governor Hogan to restore step increases and make efforts to recruit and retain a more diverse workforce, but their pleas have been ignored. If these state employees win their election, it will mean administrators and state officials must meet with the workers and negotiate in good faith over pay, benefits, and working conditions at the school. On Monday morning, during staff day at Columbia campus, we, the MSD faculty and staff, delivered a letter to acting superintendents Jennifer Ortiz and Ann Miller.  Two hundred plus colleagues gathered together near the lobby of Denton while a representative group of MSD workers met with administrators and presented our union mission statement.
